“The only thing about which you should complain is that you do complain,” said Meister Eckhart to me as we walked along the path.

I said passionately and sincerely, “But there is so much wrong in this world about which we should complain.”

He said back to me calmly and in the most matter of fact tone of voice, “To complain is to squander and disrespect the God-given gift of the moment.”

I doubled down on my protest, “Yes, but there is a lot wrong in this moment! Don’t you watch the news?”

He smiled tenderly and said, “Fine, waste your life.”
