Parish Survey Results Summary

By Fred Downs

Thank you for participating in the recently completed Engagement Survey. We had an impressive 152 respondents, which revealed a strong and committed parish community. An encouraging 88% of respondents described themselves as at least moderately engaged in the life of the church, demonstrating a healthy foundation for future ministry and growth.

Survey participants rated all ministry areas as important, with External Outreach receiving the highest level of interest, followed by Formation, Pastoral Care, Ministry Opportunities, and Music. The findings show strong alignment between the congregation’s values and Good Shepherd’s mission.

One of the clearest themes that emerged was that awareness—not interest—is the primary challenge. Many respondents indicated they were only partially aware of existing ministries and opportunities, particularly in outreach, pastoral care, and music programs. Members consistently expressed a desire for clearer communication and simpler ways to become involved.

The survey also highlighted that most barriers to participation are practical rather than motivational. Scheduling conflicts, work responsibilities, and family commitments were the most common obstacles identified. Respondents also noted that clearer guidance on “how to get involved” would be helpful.

The strongest opportunity for future growth appears to be in external outreach and mission-focused engagement, which respondents both highly valued and wanted to learn more about.

Based on the survey findings, several priorities emerged:

  • Simplifying communication through a more centralized “front door” for information and opportunities

  • Increasing visibility of existing ministries through storytelling and clearer invitations to participate

  • Expanding scheduling flexibility and accessible engagement opportunities

Overall, the survey reflects a congregation that is deeply committed to the mission of Good Shepherd and eager to engage more fully as communication and accessibility continue to improve.
