Life is a love affiar

Life is a love affair, or it should be. We are here to fall in love with God and each other. That’s the meaning of life. Which is good news for Christians because Jesus calls us to love one another as he loves us all. 

I tend to think the world has enough criticism and complaints in it. The atmosphere is saturated with the dissatisfactions of human beings. Consider this: The people of the world don’t need our feedback, they need our love.

Now some of my friends say, But my job is to give feedback!

To which I reply, Okay, fine. Hold my hyperbole lightly. If giving feedback is your job then do so graciously and wisely and with mercy. Always check your motivation. Do you want to be right and wield power or do you want to be helpful and wield love? 

My point is offered with humility from a high altitude with this question in mind: What am I offering the world, my family, my friends, my neighbors? Am I telling them what I think about them and what I’d do differently if I were them? That’s a proven way to put people in a defensive position and cause them to shut down. Or am I generously letting them know that I think that life is beautiful, a real love affair, and that they are an important and delightfully unique part of it?

Jesus didn’t say, People will know that you are my disciples if you correct them and tell them what to do. He said, They will know that you are my friends and followers if you have love for each other.

Life is supposed to be a love affair; it’s our job to make it so.
