Brother Lawrence’s Most Important Things:
Keep it simple: complex prayers and devotions are not necessary for one to practice the presence of God
Your heart is a chapel. Make simple, subtle turns to God and love inside your own heart throughout the day. You don’t have to go anywhere special, nor do you need conditions to be just right.
It is perfectly normal for your thoughts to wander away from God. When they do just return to love with a gentle inner glance.
When you hear of tragic things done by seemingly terrible people, pray for those who cause harm. Turn the matter over to God, then don’t worry about it.
The essence of the practice of the presence of God is this: “Let go once and for all of everything that we recognize as not tending toward God.That makes space for us to practice and become accustomed to an ongoing conversation with God, without ceremony or strategy.”
The practice of the presence of God is a shelter for the soul from everything that is not love.
Never tire of doing little things for the love of God who considers not the importance of the work, but the love with which the work is done.
